Veneto or Tuscany? What you actually give up either way
Tuscany is the one everybody pictures. The Veneto is forty minutes from Venice, costs about a third less, and almost nobody outside Italy has heard of it. An honest comparison from people who work in one of them.
We should declare an interest: we are based in the Veneto, and we cover Tuscany through a partner rather than driving there ourselves. So read the Tuscany column knowing that. We have still tried to write the version we would want to read.
What Tuscany genuinely has
The cypress avenues, the hilltop borghi, the light in the Val d'Orcia — these are real, and no photograph has ever quite done them justice. Tuscany also has thirty years of destination-wedding infrastructure: florists, caterers and planners who have done hundreds of foreign weddings and will not be surprised by anything you ask for.
And it has recognition. When you tell people at home you are marrying in Tuscany, they know exactly what you mean and are quietly impressed. That is worth something and it is honest to say so.
What the Veneto has
- Palladio. The sixteenth-century villas along the Brenta and around Treviso were designed for exactly this: arriving guests, long tables, dancing under a painted ceiling. Tuscany has nothing structurally equivalent at the same scale.
- Venice, forty minutes away. Your guests get one of the great cities of the world as their arrival day, and you get the option of an aperitivo on the water without moving the wedding there.
- Prosecco country. UNESCO-listed since 2019, and the best value per euro anywhere in northern Italy.
- One airport. Venice Marco Polo handles the whole region. Tuscany splits between Florence, Pisa and often Rome, which means guests arriving in three places.
The money
For the same 80-guest wedding, exclusive use of a comparable estate runs roughly €9,000–€16,000 in the Prosecco Hills against €15,000–€30,000 in Chianti or the Val d'Orcia. Catering is broadly similar. Accommodation is meaningfully cheaper in the Veneto because it is not priced for tourism in the same way.
In practice most couples find the Veneto lands about a third lower all in — enough to move you up a tier of venue, or to extend the party by three hours, or simply to not worry.
Where Tuscany wins outright
Three-day takeovers. The Tuscan borgo — an entire restored hamlet with houses, a chapel and a pool, rented exclusively — is a genuinely superior product and the Veneto has few real equivalents. If your plan is everyone sleeping on site for three days, Tuscany is the answer.
Very large budgets. Above roughly €150,000, Tuscany's top estates operate at a level the Veneto does not match.
Where the Veneto wins outright
Large guest lists. A Palladian villa on the Brenta seats 250 in a room built for it. Very few Tuscan venues do that without a marquee, and a marquee costs €15,000 and looks like a marquee.
Winter and shoulder season. Venice and the villa interiors work beautifully from October to April. Tuscany in February is mostly closed.
Anyone who cares about wine more than scenery. Valpolicella and the Prosecco Hills will give you cellar dinners and harvest weekends that Chianti charges considerably more for.
The question that usually settles it
Ask yourselves honestly: are you buying the wedding, or are you buying the name? Both are legitimate. But couples who want the name and try to save money by going to the Veneto tend to feel the substitution, and couples who want the wedding and go to Tuscany for the name tend to feel the bill.
What your guests will actually experience
This is the part that decides how the wedding is remembered. In the Veneto, guests land at one airport, stay in Treviso or Venice, and everything is within an hour. In Tuscany they land at two or three airports, hire cars, and drive unfamiliar hill roads at night after dinner. Neither is wrong, but one of them generates considerably more logistics for you and considerably more messages in the group chat.
If a meaningful share of your guest list is over seventy or travelling with small children, that difference is worth more than any view.

Compare the two against the third option almost nobody considers: Lake Garda, which sits between them on price and beats both on drama. Then check what your date does to the budget — month by month.
