The best month to get married in Italy, month by month
September is the answer most planners give and it is usually right — but it is also the most expensive and the first to sell out. Twelve months, with what each one actually costs and who it suits.
Season moves the venue line of an Italian wedding budget by about forty per cent, and it moves availability by considerably more than that. Choosing the month is the highest-leverage decision you will make after choosing the region.
The short version
- Best light and best food: late September and early October.
- Best value with good weather: late April, May, and the second half of October.
- Cheapest by a distance: November to March. Venice in January is extraordinary and half-empty.
- Avoid inland: July and August. Thirty-five degrees at four in the afternoon in a walled garden is not romantic.
Month by month
January and February. The lowest prices of the year, often forty per cent below June. Venice in winter is genuinely magical — the light is low and gold, the crowds are gone, and palazzo interiors were designed for exactly this. Inland and lakeside venues are largely shut. Small guest lists only, because your guests are flying in low season and will thank you for it.
March. Unreliable. It can be glorious and it can rain for nine days. Prices are still low. Workable if your plan is fully indoors.
April. The countryside turns green and the villa gardens open. Late April is a genuine sweet spot: shoulder-season pricing, real spring weather, and venues still have Saturdays. Easter moves and drags prices with it — check the date before you fall in love with a weekend.
May. Beautiful and busy. Gardens are at their peak in the Veneto and Tuscany. Prices have risen but not to summer levels. Saturdays in May book twelve to eighteen months out.
June. Peak season begins. Long evenings, warm nights, and the highest prices of the year alongside September. Lakes are excellent; inland is starting to get hot.
July and August. Hot. Genuinely hot — inland Veneto and Tuscany routinely pass 35°C. Lake and coastal venues stay bearable because of the water. August is also when Italy goes on holiday: some suppliers simply close, and the ones who do not charge for the privilege. If you marry in August, marry beside water and start at seven in the evening.
September. The best month in Italy, and everybody knows it. Harvest is happening in the wine regions, the light lasts until nearly nine, and the temperature is perfect for an outdoor dinner. It is also the first month to sell out — eighteen months ahead for a Saturday is not unusual.
October. Our quiet favourite. The first half still has September's light at slightly lower prices; the second half brings shoulder-season rates with real autumn colour in the hills. Rain risk rises through the month, so the rain plan stops being theoretical.
November and December. Low season proper. Cheap, atmospheric, and completely fine indoors. December in a frescoed villa with the fires lit is a wedding people remember. Just do not plan anything outside.
The trade nobody explains
A Thursday or Friday in your ideal month usually costs less than a Saturday in a worse one — often thirty to forty per cent less for an identical wedding at an identical venue. If your guests are flying internationally anyway, they are taking time off regardless, and a Friday wedding gives everyone the weekend afterwards.
This is the single easiest saving available to a foreign couple, and almost nobody takes it because they are thinking about weekends the way they would at home.
What this means for booking
For a Saturday in May, June or September: twelve to eighteen months. For a weekday, or for anything between November and March: six months is comfortable. Under three months we will be honest with you about what is actually left, which is usually more than you would think in low season and almost nothing in September.
Where the month matters most
Season swings hardest in the regions that live outdoors. On Lake Garda a July wedding and a March one are barely the same product. In the Prosecco Hills the September harvest is the whole reason to be there. Venice is the exception — it works all year and is arguably better in January than in August.
